Central School Honors Military Veterans with Annual Memorial Day Celebration

To commemorate the sacrifice and service of local military veterans on behalf of our country, Central School hosted its annual Memorial Day Veterans Celebration on Friday, May 25, 2018.  Students, staff, parents and public dignitaries gathered on the front lawn of the school property to formally honor family members who served in the U.S. armed forces, as well as remember those who have since passed.  Public dignitaries in attendance included Broadview Heights Mayor Sam Alai, as well as police and fire chiefs from the Cities of Brecksville and Broadview Heights.  The BBHCSD was represented by Superintendent Joelle Magyar, Board Members including Vice President Mike Ziegler, Fred Pedersen and Ellen Kramer, as well as Director of Human Resources Brian Wycuff, Director of Curriculum and Instruction Margaret Niedzwiecki and Director of Pupil Services Gina Symsek.
During the ceremony, approximately sixty veterans were recognized individually by name and branch of service.  Students from Central honored the veterans in attendance in several meaningful and powerful ways.  Members of the Central School choir and band performed the National Anthem, while the entire student body stood and sang “God Bless the U.S.A.” (I’m Proud to Be an American) to the veterans in attendance.  In a particularly poignant moment, students placed a set of wreaths from the American Legion in front of the school flagpole, which was followed by a powerful bagpipe rendition of “Amazing Grace” by Mr. Coleman.  Several students also read aloud poems written in class expressing their gratitude for the sacrifice and courage of the men and women of the armed forces.
Former Central School Principal Nick Carpas provided remarks explaining how he started the annual ceremony to remember the memory of his good friend, PFC Robert S. Sombati (Army) who died while serving in the Vietnam War.  Mr. Carpas also encouraged the students in attendance to personally thank a veteran for their service on behalf of our country.
The BBHCSD would like to thank all current and former members of our armed forces for attending the Memorial Day Veterans Celebration.
