University Hospitals EMS Training and Disaster Preparedness Institute Trains BBHCSD Staff with Emergency Buckets
The Brecksville-Broadview Heights City Schools is collaborating with the University Hospitals EMS Training and Disaster Preparedness Institute, which has generously donated approximately 500 Emergency Buckets, one Stop the Bleed Kit for each bus in the District’s fleet as well as local first responders, to provide Stop the Bleed training to staff in the District to be prepared in the event of an active shooter situation or other emergency.  The training took place over the past several weeks at each of the District’s buildings, including the Board Office, to familiarize BBHCSD staff with the life-saving supplies contained in each Emergency Bucket such as gauze, tourniquets, gloves, scissors, Duct tape, rope, privacy cloths, bottled water and other items.  District staff also participated in various skills stations to practice various life-saving techniques in a hands-on setting.  Each training session was overseen by Ken Hehnen and Rich Mecklenburg from the University Hospitals EMS Training and Disaster Preparedness Institute, along with Paramedic/Fire Firefighter Dan Schreiber from the Broadview Heights Fire Department.

Stop the Bleed Training

The final Stop the Bleed training session took place at the Middle School on Thursday, May 23rd, and was commemorated with a special photo opportunity with individuals representing the various organizations and municipalities that contributed to this important school safety initiative.  Special guests in attendance included Broadview Heights Mayor Samuel J. Alai, representatives from the Broadview Heights Fire Department including Fire Chief Jeff Hajek, Lieutenant Al Leonard, Paramedics/Fire Fighters Dan Schreiber, Jake Hartman and Tim Vizer, as well as Brian Monter, President of University Hospitals Parma Medical Center.

University Hospitals has received a national “Innovators in EMS” award for the design and implementation of Stop the Bleed buckets. UH EMS Training and Disaster Preparedness Institute, in collaboration with local first responders, trains teachers and staff in school districts across Northeast Ohio in bleeding control as part of the national Stop the Bleed program. Each classroom receives a bucket containing hemorrhage control and other first aid supplies, color-coded flags for safety personnel communications, toiletries and other items needed during a prolonged school lockdown. Since mid-2018, UH has donated more than 5,000 buckets and trained teachers in 100 school districts across Northeast Ohio.

The BBHCSD is thankful for the opportunity to partner with the University Hospitals EMS Training and Disaster Preparedness Institute and local first responders for the donation of Emergency Buckets and Stop the Bleed Kits, valued at $70,000, and related training.
