Love Big Band Jazz and Swing Music?

Join the Cleveland TOPS Swing Band & BBHMS Jazz Band                                                          Tuesday, May 9 @ 7PM BBHHS Auditorium

Big band jazz and swing fans, this is your chance to be entertained by two generations of musicians simultaneously in one big concert! Thanks to a grant from the Ohio Arts Council the Cleveland TOPS Swingband and the Brecksville Broadview Heights Middle School 6th, 7th and 8th grade jazz band students will appear in a FREE concert at the Brecksville Broadview Heights High School auditorium on Tuesday, May 9 at 7 pm.

Operation Medicine Cabinet - Saturday, April 29th
Bring your unused, unwanted and expired medicines for safe disposal. CAPA coalition members are partnering with the Brecksville and Broadview Heights CERT Team to collect the medicine. Locally, our site has collected over 2400 pounds to date.

Middle School Spring Orchestra Concert

The Middle School Orchestra's May 16th Spring Concert will include the string extraordinaire, Christian Howes, jazz violinist and arts educator. Due to his appearance there will be a $5.00 admission  fee at the door for this special event. Students and seniors will be admitted free. The concert will begin at 7PM.  On the day of the concert, Howes will visit the middle school for a full day workshop with orchestra students. 

About the Artist – Christian Howes

Christian is a world-renowned professional jazz violinist, native to Ohio, and a former professor at Berkley College. He launched the educational program Creative Strings Academy in 2010 designed for young musicians to enhance and encourage creativity within music no matter what instrument they play. His innovative approach to music will take students a bit further into thinking what can be accomplished musically.

Smokey Mountain Music Festival

The BBHHS Music Department is proud to report that 3 choirs and 2 orchestras competed at the Smoky Mountain music festival. BBHHS Chamber Choir won 1st place in the 4A (toughest) choral division, Treble Choir (Women's Choir) won 2nd place in the Women's Choir division, and Symphonic Choir (members of Concert and Choraleers combined) won 2nd place in 3A choral division. The Chamber Orchestra won 1st place in the 4A orchestra division, and Concert Strings (combination of Concert and String Orchestra) won 1st place in the 3A orchestra division.

Settlement Agreement Reached
On April 10, 2017, the Brecksville-Broadview Heights City School District (BBHCSD) ratified a new contract with the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Education Association (BEA), the union representing the district’s teaching staff. After negotiating for more than a year, a settlement was reached on a two-year agreement through July 2018 with a possible three-year extension tied to passage of a levy prior to June 30, 2018.
Reduction of Pay-to-Participate Fees Possible
The Board of Education passed a resolution at its March 27th meeting to reduce student pay-to-participate fees if the May 2, 2017 operating levy is approved. The fees, which cover transportation and personnel costs, for all athletic and extra curricular activities, will be reduced from 100% to 50% for each student activity. Additionally, the cap for these fees will be reduced from $1,000 per high school student to $500, and from $600 to $300 for each middle school student. 
Four National Merit Finalist Named
Congratulations Dana Dosen, Erin McMahon, Rushil Raghavan and Jessica Wang, members of the Class of 2017, for being named Finalists and considered for National Merit Scholarships to be offered this spring. The selection of some 7,400 Merit Scholarship winners from a group of 15,000 Finalists is now in progress. 
District Once Again Auditor of State Award for Financial Reporting
Based on the recent annual financial audit of the Brecksville-Broadview Heights City School District, Ohio Auditor of State, David Yost, has awarded Treasurer Rick Berdine, on behalf of the district, with the Auditor of State Award.

The Auditor of State Award is presented to local governments and school districts upon completion of a "clean" financial audit report. The audit report must be free of any findings for recovery, material citations, material weaknesses, significant deficiencies, single audit findings or questioned costs. The district routinely earns this prestigious award.

Board of Education Unanimously Approves Levy Request
At the January 23 meeting, The Board of Education unanimously approved the second resolution placing a 5.99 mill operating levy on the May 2, 2017 ballot. The Board signed the attached letter showcasing their support of this important and much-needed levy.

Another BBHHS State Champion
Congratulations to BBHHS freshman wrestler Julian Tagg, a state champion in the 106 pound category. He is the first freshman state champion in school history. 
Another Gymnastics State Title
For the 14th consecutive year, the BBHHS Girls Gymnastics Team won the State championship on Friday, March 3. This win brings the state title to our district for the 17th time overall. Amazing and well deserved accomplishments for Coach Joan Ganim and her teams. 
On Saturday, the talents of the Lady Bees continued when senior Tessa Phillips and junior Emily Huffman took first and second place in the all-around competition for the OSHAA 45th Annual State Gymnastics individual competition at Hilliard Bradley High School.
Meet Mr. Steven Ast- Our Next High School Principal
On Monday, February 27th, the Board of Education approved Steven Ast as the next principal of Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School. Please stop by the high school media center on Monday, March 6, from 6-7:30PM, to informally meet Mr. Ast. He is currently the principal of Chagrin Falls High School and will replace Mr. Joe Mueller who is retiring at the end of the current school year. 
Stepping Stone Preschool Earns Five-Star Award

The State of Ohio awarded the district's Stepping Stone Preschool a Five Star Award for exceeding the  state mandated standards. Stepping Stone, a districtwide program for special needs students is housed at Hilton School. Individual goals, accreditation, parent involement and transitional programs are several of the increased standards offered at Stepping Stone. For more details: Stepping Stone News Release

Two More Talking Bees Qualified for National Competition
The BBHHS Speech and Debate Team competed at the National Qualifier Tournament and now two more students will compete at Nationals. Congratulations to sophomore Gabby Dachtler, First Alternate in Dramatic Interpretation to the National Speech and Debate tournament and to our National Qualifiers, freshman Ian Stewart in Humorous Interpretation and Senior Elizabeth Painter in Dramatic Interpretation. The Bees have set a team record for most National Qualifiers this season. 
National Qualifier for Speech and Debate
Talking Bees Senior Rushil Raghavan qualified for the National Speech and Debate Tournament in Student Congress at the Congress National Qualifier held at Gilmour Academy! He is our first National Qualifier since 2011 and our first in Congress since we renewed the team in 2008. Rushil is a two time State Qualifier in Public Forum Debate. He is The Debate Captain and also mentors our Middle School Debaters.  
BBHHS Talking Bees Qualify for States
The Talking Bees competed at the Cleveland District Speech and Debate State Qualifier Competition on February 4th and eleven BBHHS students qualified for state competition. Congratulations to Elizabeth Painter, Alanna Restifo, and Zoey Casa for their qualifying performance in Declamation, Gabby Dachtler in Drama, Ian Stewart and Christine Rutkowski in Humor, Valerie Painter in Program of Oral Interpretation, Frank Zhu and Pammy Boulas in Lincoln Douglas Debate, and Everett Dalesio and Rushil Raghavan in Public Forum Debate.

Advisor Mark McCandless reported that Christine and Ian are the first Bees in the history of our program to qualify in Humor. Elizabeth, Alanna and Zoey are the first to qualify two years in a row in the same event. Frank and Pammy mark the first time BBHHS has had two Lincoln Douglas debaters qualify for State in the same year. Valerie and Elizabeth are the first sisters to qualify in the same year for State. Certainly a year for "firsts".
All State Honors Band
Chas Backman, Nick Mihalich and Ava Traum, members of the BBHHS Band, auditioned and were chosen to participate in the All State Honors Band during the Ohio Music Education Association Conference held February 1 -3 at the Cleveland Convention Center. The All State Honors Band concert, which is free and open to the public, will begin at 8 PM on Friday, February 3.
New Football Coach Selected
BBHHS Business Education teacher Jason Simonetti accepted the position of head Bees varsity football. He has been an assistant coach for 7 years at BBHHS. Prior, he was the head coach (West) for the Cuyahoga County East/West All Star Team and served as the Defensive Coordinator in the Parma City Schools and Buckeye Local Schools in Medina County.  Former Bees Coach Jason Black opted to step down to pursue other career options.

Althetic Director Mark Maslona welcomes Simonetti to the head position and is looking forward to an exciting season this fall. He also is thankful for the eight years and four state playoff appearances the Bees enjoyed under Black's tenure. Black will continue to be a paart of the athletic department.

Central Elementary Nominated for Blue Ribbon Status by ODE

The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) nominated Central Elementary School to be a National Blue Ribbon School.  ODE considers Central to be an Exemplary High Performing School.  National Blue Ribbon Schools are public and nonpublic schools that produce outstanding results for all students, have demonstrated consistent excellence, and have made progress in closing gaps in student achievement.          

Central will now embark on a lengthy and rigorous application process. This application includes compiling data and providing multiple narratives that describe the strategies, curriculum and supports that make Central a Blue Ribbon School. The application will be submitted to the U.S. Department of Education in the spring and will be reviewed and certified over the summer. The Secretary of Education will announce the 2017 National Blue Ribbon Schools in September. Principal Chris Hartland and the Central staff hope their efforts will result in Central being named a Blue Ribbon School.

Shannon Williams is Ohio Volleyball Player of the Year

BBHHS Junior Shannon Williams is the 2016-17 Gatorade Ohio Volleyball Player of the Year. Williams is the first Gatorade Ohio Volleyball Player of the Year to be chosen from Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School.

Board Elects Leadership and Approves Levy Request
At its Organizational Meeting, the Board of Education reelected Mark Janzten to serve as President of the Board for 2017. Kathleen Mack was reelected to the position of Vice President.
Also, the Board approved the first of two required resolutions to place a 5.99 mill continuous operating levy on the May 2, 2017 ballot. The second resolution will be approved at the regular January Board meeting on Monday, January 23.
A group of citizens has volunteered to mount a levy campaign and share information with the community prior to the election. The last time a new operating levy was approved by the community was in 2004.

BBHHS Orchestra Members Selected to Perform with OSU
The BBHHS Orchestra will have nine students rperforming with the Ohio University Honors Orchestra from January 13-15, 2017. This is the most students in the school's history to achieve this level of participation. Student musicians auditioned for and were selected by Mr. Steven Huang from the Ohio University Orchestra.

Board Took Action on Two Important Items
The Brecksville-Broadview Heights Board of Education approved a new contract with the non-teaching, support staff at the November 21 Board of Education meeting. Additionally, at that meeting the Board  began discussing plans for an operating levy to be on the May 2017 ballot.   
BBHHS Volleyball Team Wins 1st State Championship
A terrific and competitive season for the 2016 BBHHS Girls Varsity Volleyball team came to an end on Saturday, November 12 with the Lady Bees winning the state title for the first time in school history. Congratulations to this amazing group of student athletes, coaches, trainers, and their families and fans.

Talking Bees Tournament

The BBHHS Speech and Debate team enjoyed great success this weekend as they hosted their third annual speech and debate contest. Over 500 student competitors, adult judges, coaches and volunteers from 22 schools attended the Talking Bees Tournament on Saturday, November 12. Overall the Bees placed 5th for their highest team finish of the year.

At the high school level, Gabby Dachtler placed 1st in Dramatic Interpretation earning her third bid to the State Tournament and Frank Zu took 3rd place in the Lincoln Douglas debate to earn his second trip to the state finals. Also placing were Elizabeth Painter, who competed in two events and placed in both, Pammy Boulas, Delia Brennan, Christine Rutkowski and Aaron Yeh.

The first year Middle School Team was well represented during the awards ceremony with Leah Honeycutt and Marina Tarrassenko placing 5th in Public Forum debate and Miriel Yeh placed 2nd in Original Oratory.

Coach Mark McCandless is proud of the team’s progress and results.

Socktober - A Huge Success
With the help of the 3rd grade Kindness Club and Mrs. Boczulak, Highland Drive Elementary School participated in the worldwide Socktober movement during the month of October. Highland brought in 1,570 pairs of new socks that were donated to homeless shelters. Photos  
Quality Profile for 2015-16
For the third consecutive year, the Brecksville-Broadview Heights School District, along with approximately 60 other school districts in Ohio, prepared a Quality Profile for their communities highlighting student, staff and district success and achievements.
2016 Gallery of Achievement Induction
Five new members were inducted into the BBHCSD Gallery of Achievement on October 13. Four graduates and one former faculty member were selected for their lifetime achievements and contributions to society. 
Four BBHHS Names National Merit Semi-finalists
Four members of the Class of 2017 have been named as semi-finalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Competition. The four BBHHS students named as National Merit Scholar semi-finalists for 2017 are: Dana Dosen, Erin McMahon, Rushil Raghavan and Jessica Wang.  
Nine Members of Class of 2017 are National Merit Commended Students
Nine more BBHHS seniors have been honored by the National Merit Scholarship Program. Their scores earned them recognition as Commended Students. Congratulations to Justin Bowen, David Dierker, Bridget Fallon, Alyssa Holzinger, Brielle Marlow, Patrick Meng, Jose Prakash, Ryan Serraglio and Jaewon Yu.  
District 8th in State on Report Card Data
The Brecksville-Broadview Heights School District's test scores and other ratings on the new Ohio Department of Education's Report Card are the eighth highest in the state. In both Cuyahoga County and all of Northeastern Ohio, BBH ranked fourth.  To view the entire report card: BBHCSD Report Card.
Additionally, Chippewa Elementary School placed among the top 20 in the state on the Performance Index grade, which is Ohio's main measure of how much students know.
Highland Drive Elementary is proud to introduce it's newest initiative: #kindkids!
Highland Drive Elementary School wants to be known as a “Kind School”. Research show that kindness is indeed contagious and it is natural for people to seek the positive emotions that accompany seeing and doing acts of kindness. Highland Drive Elementary believes that by introducing this initiative at the elementary level, they will help instill in students a life-long desire to help spread kindness at school, at home and beyond their years at elementary school.

Registration for New Students
Please visit New Student Registration sectionon this website to register students new to the district. 

Complete the enrollment package and call  440-740-4027  for an appointment to finalize enrollment. Registration hours are Monday - Thursday 7:30AM to 3:30PM and Friday 7:30AM - 11:30 PM. Bring the completed enrollment package along with requested documentation to the registration appointment at the Education Center, 6638 Mill Road, Brecksville.

Review of 6th Grade Students' Use of Chromebooks
Students who entered the sixth grade in August 2015 were the first class to be given Chromebook laptop computers to use throughout their three years at Brecksville Broadview Heights Middle School.   
Physics Cardboard Boat Regatta
High School teacher Mary Ellen Mauser once again organized a curriculum based and energetic cardboard boat regatta. 
Math Olympics at Hilton
The first grade team at Hilton held "Math Olympics" on Friday, May 20th. There were 10 "events" set up around the school at which the students had to use the skills they've learned this year in math. The events focused on addition, subtraction, telling time by reading a clock, measurement, greater than/less than, identifying numbers to 120, and problem solving.

Eight teachers either achieved the status of Master Teacher or renewed their Master Teacher Designation this spring and were honored at the May Board of Education meeting. 
BBHHS Earns State Board of Education Award

The State Board of Education awarded Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School one of it's first Annual All A Awards’s for grades earned on the Ohio School Report Card. Only 8 high schools in Cuyahoga County and 28 in the entire state earned this award.
