The Brecksville-Broadview Heights City School District proudly recognizes Doris Barber (faculty), Carol Buchanan (faculty), Dominic Caruso (Class of 1994), and Ed Herrick (faculty and Class of 1965) on being inducted into the Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School Gallery of Achievement. On Friday, October 7th, the above individuals were recognized during a morning long ceremony for distinguishing themselves through personal and vocational accomplishments and community service.
Doris Barber was a thirty-year Elementary Physical Education teacher who also served as BBHHS Girls track head coach from 1976-1988, co-founded the BBHHS Gymnastics team, and was the district’s first female Athletic Director from 1988-1996. Known affectionately as “Mama Bee” for her enthusiastic presence at BBHHS athletic events, Doris was named teacher of the year several times and received the Martha Holden Jennings Award for excellence in teaching. Doris' daughter, Deby Cartwright, proudly accepted the award on behalf of her late mother at the ceremony.
During her thirty-two years in the BBHCSD, Carol Buchanan taught Latin and French language courses and was the recipient of the Kiwanis Dedicated to Teaching award. She was an active member in the Ohio Modern Language Association and organized over a dozen student trips in the United States and overseas, co-sponsored the ski club, and served on multiple curriculum committees.
A 1994 graduate of BBHHS, Dominic Caruso earned a Bachelor of Science in Communications from Northwestern University where he was a 4-year letterman in wrestling and named the Northwestern student athlete of the week several times. In 2001, he earned his Series 3 licenses as a commodity broker in New York before joining the family-owned Caruso Coffee Company which was established in 2003 in Brecksville. Caruso Coffee received a Source America Small Business Partnership award for its work with nonprofit Vocational Guidance Services (VGS) to employ adults such as veterans suffering physical or mental health issues. Through the “Coffee for a Cause” initiative sponsored by Channel 3-WKYC and Erie Island Coffee Company, Caruso’s has donated over $112,000 to the Cleveland Food Bank. Mr. Caruso was elected in 2019 to Brecksville City Council and currently serves as Council Vice President.
Ed Herrick was a Physical Education teacher for thirty-years in the BBHCSD, spending time at the Junior and Senior High School buildings. Mr. Herrick served as a coach for the wrestling and football teams from 1984-2010, which included defensive coordinator for the 1983 State Championship team , and head football coach from 1984-1992. In 2022, Mr. Herrick returned to coaching and serves as a mentor to numerous former student athletes. As a tribute to his contributions, the Bees’ football team gives the “Ed Herrick Award” to one senior athlete at the end of each season.
