BBHMS Math Counts Team Celebrates First Place Finish
BBHMS Math Counts Team state qualifiers with adviser Matt Auble
The Math Counts team at Brecksville-Broadview Heights Middle School celebrated a series of impressive individual and team accomplishments during their most recent competition at Ashland University on Saturday, February 4, 2023. All twelve students from BBHMS participated in the first two rounds of the competition. Round one consisted of thirty problems that had to be solved individually without the help of calculators while Round two featured four sets of two problems each, with students required to complete each set alone in six minutes with calculators permitted. The third round featured a team format with four students from each participating school working together to complete ten problems within twenty minutes. BBHMS featured an impressive nine of the top finishers at the competition and will be sending the following team of students to the state competition at Columbus State College on Saturday, March 11th.

Jeremy Hammel:   1st place (38 points)
Alton Hirt:   2nd place (37 points)
Cole Hileman 3rd place (35 points)
Vanshika Myneni & Luke Maher tied for 4th (33 points)

During the 2022-2023 school year, twenty-seven students have participated in Math Counts since the group began meeting at the beginning of October 2022. The co-curricular group meets twice a week for about 1.5 hours during which students work on practice problems provided by the Society of Professional Engineers. BBHMS Math teacher Matt Auble has advised the Math Counts team for the past thirty years. During that time, three BBHMS Middle School students have advanced to the national competition in Washington D.C. Congratulations to the BBHMS Math Counts team on their first place finish and advancement to the upcoming state competition!
