Congratulations to BBHHS Social Studies Teacher Dathan Cole who was recently recognized with the Harvard Business School of Northeast Ohio’s Samuel H. Elliott Educator Award. Mr. Cole was one of two teachers to be granted the prestigious award at a virtual presentation of the 2021 Enspire Conference on Saturday, November 6th. The Samuel H. Elliott Educator Award recognizes K-12 teachers for outstanding accomplishments in helping students develop an increased understanding of the free enterprise system and ethical business management. The list of accomplishments includes the integration of a business plan competition into the Economics curriculum at the high school which has resulted in over one-hundred students being recognized with scholarships. During the 2020-21 school year, eight students were awarded scholarships in the Believe in Ohio Regional Competition, with two selected to receive a $20,000 college scholarship at the state level competition. In 2017, Mr. Cole was honored with the opportunity to deliver a presentation at the AP Annual Conference in Washington D.C. which highlighted learning economics through sketching and interpreting graphs. The presentation also cited a letter of recommendation from a former student who lauded the “vigor and passion” that Mr. Cole displays as a classroom teacher.

Now in his thirty-first-year teaching overall, Mr. Cole has taught economics at BBHHS since the building opened in 1997 and has held his current teaching position for the past twenty-five years. During the 2021-22 school year, he will be teaching sections of AP Economics (4), Honors Economics (1), and Academic Economics (1) courses. During his first six years in the district, Mr. Cole taught 8th grade science and American History at the Middle School.

The Brecksville-Broadview Heights City Schools proudly congratulates Mr. Dathan Cole on receiving the Harvard Business School of Northeast Ohio’s Samuel H. Elliott Educator Award, and thanks him for his enthusiastic devotion to the content area, the craft of teaching, and helping our students succeed!
