All K-12 Students to Return to 5-Day/Week, In-Person Learning on January 19th

Based on recent developments of information shared by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, the Brecksville-Broadview Heights City Schools will return all students and staff in Grades K-12 to 5-Day/Week, In-Person learning, effective Tuesday, January 19th. Preschool students will resume their normal, 4-Day/Week schedule. The Online Learning Model, for those families who so choose, will continue to be an option. This decision by the District comes as a result of a few important pieces of information:

  • Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has stated publicly many times that his top priorities are to protect lives, ensure the safety of the lives of the frontline healthcare workers who help to protect those lives… and return students to the classroom

  • On December 30th, Governor DeWine and state health department leaders announced the results of several new studies which indicate that Ohio students and teachers exposed to coronavirus in the classroom will no longer be required to quarantine if masks were being properly worn and social distancing was followed. The results did not include extra-curricular activities. Students will still be required to quarantine if mask protocols were not being properly followed.

  • One study referenced was conducted by the Ohio Schools COVID-19 Evaluation Team and The Ohio State University, who reviewed the data from a handful of public schools in Central Ohio, whose students who came into “close contact” of an infected classmate.

Accordingly, and upon learning this news, the Board of Education and District leaders have made the decision that on Tuesday, January 19th the District will resume full in-person learning 5-days/week for all students. This news also ensures that teachers, staff and other school employees will be included in the second phase, known as Phase1B, of the coronavirus vaccine distribution in the state, which is supposed to begin later this month.

Schedule Reminder for Week of January 11th

Please be reminded that next week will be a 4-day school week for students with Friday, January 15th being a Records Day and no classes for students. The learning schedule for the week of January 11th at each of the levels of education is below:

  • At the High School, students with last names beginning with the letters A-L will attend in-person class on Monday and Tuesday. Students with last names beginning with the letters M-Z will attend in-person class on Wednesday and Thursday. No class on Friday.

  • At the Middle School, students with last names beginning with the letters A-L will attend in-person class Monday and Tuesday. Students with the last name beginning with letters M-Z will attend in-person class on Thursday. Wednesday will remain a remote learning day for all students. No class on Friday.

  • Students at Chippewa, Highland Drive and Hilton Elementary School will maintain their all-remote schedule. PreK students and families will maintain their remote schedule next week as well.

The District will proceed with the understanding that your student will remain in his or her current learning model. Only changes to that status should prompt a call by parents to their child’s principal to signify any changes.

In addition, upon returning to Hybrid Learning next week and beyond, the District is asking parents to take their child's temperature on a daily basis. If your student has a temperature of greater than 100.4 degrees, please keep them home. The BBHCSD will continue upholding its mask-wearing policy and following social distancing guidelines to the greatest extent possible. Thank you for your support with these matters.
