The District’s award-winning Speech and Debate team earned a third-place finish with a strong performance at the first tournament of 2020, which took place Friday, January 3rd – Saturday, January 4th at the
High School and Middle School.
Approximately 433 high school and middle school students from 32 schools
competed at the tournament which featured nine speech events and 5 debate
events. The performance of each
individual student was not only judged based on specific criteria but was also
factored into the overall team placement at the competition. The Brecksville-Broadview Heights Speech and
Debate team is advised by Head Coach Mark McCandless and includes 32 students
on the High School team and 14 members on the Middle School team. Practices begin in September and are held for
both teams every Tuesday and Thursday evening at the high school. In order to be successful, students must
continually improve their speeches or select new debate topics to research. Team members compete in a twelve-tournament
season which begins in October and concludes at the end of January. The High School and Middle School State
Tournaments are held respectively during the first and second weekends of March. Open to all students, the Speech and Debate
Team provides a challenging, yet deeply rewarding experience that leaves a
positive impression upon all who participate.
Congratulations, to the Speech and Debate Team on another impressive
accomplishment!
