Students in the 8th-grade Innovation & Design class, a one-semester STEM elective course at BBHMS, recently engaged in an exciting learning experience featuring air-powered rockets. Under the direction of Mrs. Cathy Roderick, BBHMS STEM & Science Teacher, students began by reviewing how to create experimental investigations and variables. The students then designed their own experimental investigation by manipulating one independent variable and measuring one dependent variable, while keeping all remaining variables constant. Some groups examined how the number of pumps affected the duration each air rocket remained airborne, while others investigated how the number of pumps affected the distance the rocket traveled from the launch pad. The experiment required strong communication and the ability to troubleshoot issues while promoting problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
