News Channel 5 recently spotlighted the Colony Cupboard, a needs-based resource closet designed to support students who are economically disadvantaged or in economic transition, on Wednesday, November 27th during the 5 p.m. broadcast.
You can watch the full story here. The idea emerged from a recognition of our students’ evolving needs—many are not only students during the day but also serve as providers and caretakers for their families at night. Building leaders saw firsthand how these responsibilities were affecting their academic and personal lives. This need was really first recognized during Covid as our district worked to provide grab and go meals to those who qualified for free and reduced lunch. The idea caught the attention of WEWS Newschannel 5, whose 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. anchor Damon Maloney, recently visited the building to learn more. What he learned, and will be broadcast during the week of November 25th, is that The Colony Cupboard was born from the realization that individual teachers were stepping up to support students in isolation. Many educators were spending their own resources to ensure students had what they needed, but these efforts were happening in separate pockets. BBHHS saw an opportunity to bring this work together and engage our community in creating a unified, sustainable program to meet the needs of all students. The charge was led by Bridget Milano and Megan Boulton from our counseling department and was truly a passion project of theirs. The Cupboard offers a range of essential items, including clothing, school supplies, hygiene products, and sometimes even food or emergency resources that help ensure students can focus on their education without worrying about basic necessities. One of the most exciting aspects of the Colony Cupboard is how it has brought our community together. Local organizations, businesses, and volunteers have stepped up to donate supplies and offer their support. This collaboration has strengthened the connection between the school and the community while ensuring that we can meet the growing needs of our students. Future plans include expanding to the rest of the buildings.
