As part of an effort to help raise awareness about health, wellness and safety issues, Highland Drive Elementary celebrated Health and Safety Week from Monday, September 18th through Friday September 22nd. Students visited the Highland Island courtyard area during their lunch/recess to participate in fun activities and learn from a different presenter each day of the week. Staff from the Heinen’s Wellness Department spoke with students about nutrition and healthy foods on Monday, September 18th, while Functions of Life helped students become an “American Ninja Warrior” for the day with a fun and challenging obstacle course on Tuesday, September 19th. On Wednesday, September 20th, Dr. Jennifer Bryk Hechko from Brecksville Kids Dentistry stopped by with Balto, a certified therapy dog, to share about the importance of dental health. A visit from Asian Sun Martial Arts on Thursday, September 21st gave students the chance to learn various age-appropriate self-defense techniques and martial arts terms.

Health and Safety week concluded with a visit from Brecksville Police Officers Jon Chrisopulos and Mark Krzynowek, who spoke with students about several safety-related topics, including what information to provide during a 911 call. Students were then given various prizes such as stickers and pencils for providing correct answers. Also present were members of H.U.D.D.L.E. (Helping Us Develop Dedication, Leadership and Enthusiasm), a BBHHS student-led group dedicated to drug and alcohol prevention. The H.U.D.D.L.E. ambassadors used a bubble blowing activity to demonstrate how smoking affects a person’s lungs. The BBHSCD would like to thank the Highland Drive PSO for sponsoring Health and Safety Week, as well as all presenters for donating their time and resources to educate our students.
