Student Learning and the Impact of Inclement Weather

(Download PDF of Message)

The BBHCSD shares the information below to inform our school family about the impact of inclement weather on student learning in our district. Students and staff have done a great job, and we appreciate our families’ continued patience and support.

• Learning time for students is required to meet an hour-based minimum standard metric per the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce during a given school year.

• This hour-based metric replaced the previous ‘calamity day’ standard with the passage of House Bill 59 in the fall of 2025.

The State of Ohio’s minimum standards are:

• 1,001 hours of instruction for students in grades 7 - 12

• 910 hours of instruction for students in grades K - 6

• 455 hours of instruction for students in half-day kindergarten

• The BBHCSD has included excess hours that account for missed days of school per our Board-approved district calendar.

Our BBHCSD’s currently adopted hours of instructional time for the 2025-2026 school year are:

• 1,150.45 hours of instruction for students in grades 9 - 11

• 1,077.30 hours of instruction for students in grade 12

• 1,133.15 hours of instruction for students in grades 6 - 8

• 1,081.25 hours of instruction for students in grades 1 - 5

• 1,062.50 hours of instruction for students in all-day kindergarten

• The average school day in the BBHCSD is 6.65 hours for HS students and 6.25 hours for MS and Elementary School students.

• As you can see, the BBHCSD dedicated instructional time this school year far exceeds the state’s minimum standards listed above, providing district leaders flexibility to close school and remain above the state minimum.

Thank you for your continued patience and support of the Brecksville-Broadview Heights City Schools. Please remain safe and do all you can to stay warm during this cold winter weather.
