American Legion Auxiliary Recognizes BBHES for Commitment to Military Families and Veterans

Brecksville-Broadview Heights Elementary School was recently recognized by the American Legion Auxiliary for its strong commitment to meeting the needs of military families and supporting veterans through various building-wide and student-led initiatives. During a special ceremony in the Media Center on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, Rhonda Janowski, Secretary for the Brecksville American Legion Post 196, presented principals Bob Magyar and Colleen Toth with the Norma Frazier BEST All-American Elementary School Award. This recognition celebrates the dedicated efforts of BBHES on behalf of military families and veterans throughout the school year. On Veterans Day, classrooms created hand-written notes of gratitude and families purchased items through an Amazon gift registry for delivery to the Veterans Administration. The day of remembrance was capped off with a heartfelt recognition assembly attended by second grade students and which featured guest remarks by local veterans.
During Purple Up! Day on November 19th, all staff and students were encouraged to wear purple to honor and support fellow students who are children of members of our military. In April 2026, BBHES was named a Purple Star School by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce Development. The Purple Star designation is awarded to schools who meet the criteria associated with meeting the needs of military-connected students and families.
The America Legion Auxiliary also recognized student Graham Rambo with the Good Deed Award for his generosity and dedicated efforts on behalf of veterans. As a fifth-grade student during the 2025-2026 school year, Graham organized a creative fundraiser to benefit homeless veterans as the final project for an independent study. Students had the opportunity to put their fifth-grade teachers in "jail” on the cafetorium stage by donating approximately seventy water bottles and fifty small snack bags which were distributed to veterans in need. Graham helped to promote the successful fundraiser by hanging posters in the hallways of the fifth-grade wing of the building. Way to go, Graham!
