Transparency and Accountability in Public Education

Understanding Public Records

In accordance with the Ohio Revised Code, "Public Records" include any document, device, or item, regardless of physical form—including electronic records—created or received under the jurisdiction of the Board or its employees. These records document the organization, functions, policies, decisions, procedures, and operations of the Brecksville-Broadview Heights City School District.

Exemptions: Under R.C. 149.43, certain records are not subject to public release, including medical records, genetic information, trial preparation materials, confidential law enforcement investigatory records, and records prohibited from release by State or Federal law.

How to Make a Request

While no specific language is required to make a request, the requester must identify the records with sufficient clarity to allow the District to identify, retrieve, and review them.

Ambiguous Requests: If a request is overly broad or ambiguous, our Records Officer will assist you by explaining how our records are maintained and accessed, providing you an opportunity to revise and clarify your request.

Board Governance

The District’s handling of public records is governed by officially adopted Board Policy:
