Highland Elementary School Begins Exploration of “The Dot” To Promote Artistic Creativity
Highland Dot Exhibit
Students at Highland Elementary School recently began their exploration, and celebration, of “The Dot,” just in time for the September 15, 2018 International Dot Day festivities that take place around the world to honor the values shared in the book, by author Peter H. Reynolds. “The Dot,” is an elementary level book that shares the artistic adventures of main character, Vashti, who begins a creative journey by drawing a simple dot on a white sheet of paper. This leads to her improving, elaborating and expanding on her dot only to realize that she is truly an artist. Students at Highland reviewed the book and then discussed these values of artistic expression in their classes. Even more, students then expanded on those ideas in the building’s S.T.E.A.M. lab. All of this artistic activity has culminated into the lobby being transformed into a white canvas, on which students have begun drawing and elaborating on their very own dots. Great work to the staff at Highland Elementary School for introducing this resource to the students and then allowing them to take tangible steps to follow their own creative pursuits.
