BBHCSD Provides Breakfast to Highland Elementary and Central School Students Courtesy of Grant from US Department of Agriculture

Courtesy of a grant awarded in the fall of 2016 by the US Department of Agriculture, the BBHCSD has launched a program that provides students at Highland Elementary and Central School with breakfast items they can share just before classes begin each morning. After various studies and research conducted by district Registered Dietitian / School Nutritionist Cindy Finohr identified that certain nutritional needs could be met, her team applied for the grant. Students at Central are able to pick up breakfast items as they pass by the cafeteria. Students at Highland Elementary have access to a portable breakfast cart which features cereal, non-fat milk, assorted fruits and juices, proteins and whole grains, a combination of items which is referred to as the ‘breakfast bundle,’ which is available for $1.75 for those students who must purchase items. Students receiving free or reduced lunches qualify for free or reduced breakfasts also. The portable breakfast cart permits students to obtain items while they’re walking in the front door for school, between 8:45 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. each morning. A hot breakfast is provided at least one time each week as well. The ultimate purpose of providing breakfast at Central and the breakfast cart at Highland Elementary School is learning. The BBHCSD knows that solid dietary nutrition leads to better learning in the classroom. Plans are to include Hilton Elementary School in the near future with this program. Congratulations to the Nutrition team who applied for this grant, won it, and is now deploying the funds to benefit our district’s students.
