Highland Drive Elementary Students Learn Hands on Skills at Makers’ Club

Makers' Club at Highland

Elementary students at Highland Drive are making the conscious decision to spend time learning about hands-on problem-solving skills and more, as part of the building’s Makers’ Club opportunity.  The program is offered to interested students in grades 2-4, with each grade level meeting separately once per week on an assigned day during lunch and recess.  Participating students engage in a different project each week using a wide variety of materials and tools.  STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) concepts are often integrated into each week’s project to enrich students’ experiences with STEM education.

During the Week of September 24th, students learned about various “attachment techniques”, such as how to use fasteners, create slots and flanges, as well as make homemade hinges using pipe cleaners.  The activities require students to apply their creativity and critical thinking skills in a fun, engaging environment. A special word of congratulations goes out to these Highland Elementary students for supplementing their free time with valuable, hands-on Makerspace activities and opportunities!
