2019 Gallery of Achievement

The Brecksville-Broadview Heights City Schools would like to officially congratulate this year’s inductees to the Gallery of Achievement, who were formally enshrined in a memorable ceremony earlier today. Those individuals include: Jack A. Hruby, Class of 1962, David Bronczek, Class of 1972, Ralph DeSantis, Faculty member, 1975- 2005,  Katherine Dolan, Class of 1997, David Mansbery, Class of 1972, and Edward Sustersic, Faculty member, 1958-1967.  These inductees represent individuals who made reputable accomplishments during their tenure in the District, after their time here, or a combination of both.

Jack A. Hruby served as Brecksville Mayor and Service Director from 1970 – 1986 and holds the distinction of being the youngest Mayor elected in the State of Ohio at 24 years old.  During his tenure as Mayor of Brecksville, Mr. Hruby served as President of Ohio Mayor and Managers Association, as well as President of Cuyahoga County Mayors and Managers.  A member of the Class of 1962, Mr. Hruby was recognized as an outstanding trumpet player and for his Thespian talents.

David Bronczek, Class of 1972, joined FedEx in 1976, shortly after earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Kent State University.  Starting as an hourly team member in the company’s pickup and delivery service, David moved into management positions in early 1980, working his way up to become President and CEO before his retirement in February 2019.

A well-respected educator in the District for thirty years, Ralph DeSantis taught 6th grade Language Arts, Social Studies, Remedial Reading and Gifted students, as well as 8th grade U.S. History at the Middle School.  Mr. DeSantis was selected twice as the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Educator of the Year, and served as the Assistant Basketball, Football and Track and Field Coach during his tenure.

A 1997 graduate of BBHHS, Katherine Dolan has broken barriers during her career in law enforcement, holding the distinguished honor as the first female Chief of the Cleveland Metroparks Ranger Department and the first female member of the Cleveland Heights SWAT Team for PD Drug Enforcement Administration. Katherine holds a Cum Laude Masters of Science degree from the University of Cincinnati, and a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Toledo.

Class of 1972 member David Mansbery founded the Yuletide Hunger Program in 1983, which has served countless area families in need during the holiday season and beyond.  David is also the inventor and holder of various U.S. and foreign patents, as well as local business interests.  In addition, he is a coach and founder of the first Baseball School in Northeast Ohio.  His educational accomplishments include an MBA in Finance from Case Western Reserve University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Kentucky.

An inspirational leader to students, Edward Sustersic embodied hard work and a commitment to excellence throughout his life, including his tenure as a BBHCSD faculty member from 1958-1967.  Awarded the Bronze Star as a member of the 8th Air Force during World War II, Edward was also a member of the 1948-49 All-American Football Conference Champion Cleveland Browns.  Mr. Sustersic received a Master’s degree from Kent State University and a Bachelor of Science degree from Findlay College, where he was inducted into the College Hall of Fame in 1971.  During his tenure as a BBHCSD faculty member, Edward co-founded the longest running Holiday Wrestling tournament.  The annual Ed Sustersic Award is given each year to recognize one outstanding boy and girl athlete from the District.

Congratulations to all this year’s Gallery of Achievement inductees.
