Middle School News

The Board of Education took the final step to place a 5.8 mill operating levy on the November 2010 ballot at their July 8, 2010 meeting. The term of this levy is for a  five-year period.

The District has worked aggressively to cut costs by implementing reductions in staff, programs, and services over the past two years and will continue to do so. However, the approximate $3 million annual savings generated by these cuts is not enough to eliminate the need for additional operating funds. The District has not received an increase in operating funds for the past six years. The last time a new levy was approved by voters was in August 2004

[Scot Prebles]The Brecksville-Broadview Heights Board of Education unanimously approved the selection of Scot T. Prebles as the district’s new Superintendent of Schools at its meeting June 21. He will replace Dr. Tom Diringer who is retiring from the district at the end of July.

Prebles is currently the superintendent of Granville Exempted Village Schools in Granville, Ohio. Like Brecksville-Broadview Heights, Granville is one of only 18 districts in the State of Ohio to earn an “Excellent with Distinction” rating on the Ohio Department of Education’s Local Report Card for ten consecutive years.

Mr. Prebles previously served as Director of Secondary Education and high school principal for Worthington City Schools. Earlier in his career he was a teacher, coach, and high school principal with Edgewood City Schools, Kings Local City Schools, and Wilmington City Schools. Both his Bachelor’s and Masters Degrees were earned at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Prebles, his wife Leah, and their two elementary school-age children are looking forward to moving to the District and becoming active and visible members of the community.

Dear Parents,

This year middle school students will be taking sixth, seventh and eighth grade academic language arts classes in the fall will be embarking on a summer reading program centered on student choice, technology, and the ability to communicate or talk about books.

Each student will be required (click here for list of requirements) to read two books this summer (6th graders one book).  These books will be their choice.  We will post a list of possible titles (several hundred) on the school website, but these are just ideas. The goal is for kids to read books they enjoy.  Accelerated students will have certain books they must read (see list on back).

Using our districts on-line learning platform (moodle), kids will post their thoughts on the book they are reading to a forum.  A rubric is provided on the moodle site to guide them as they do this.  Other students will be able to respond to them or just read these postings when they are looking for a good book.  Our hope is that kids will use each other as resources to find quality literature, talk about books through the summer, and generally enjoy this project. Each student will be introduced to this program and how to access moodle before school ends this year.

It is our hope that parents become involved in the selection of books and that the program foster discussion of reading between parent and child. All books are to be school appropriate. Students need to have their school user name and password to access moodle. The moodle site is not an open web site that anyone can access and is monitored. All behaviors on the site need to be classroom appropriate. You may email the eighth grade language arts teachers with any questions at zenirj@bbhcsd.org, lloydj@bbhcsd.org, or the seventh grade teacher at wilsond@bbhcd.org, or the sixth grade teacher at wojtowiczk@bbhcsd.org.

Sincerely,

Language Arts Teachers
