  Summer Discovery Camp 2010

Sports, Art and Theatre, and Wilderness/Science options available

Does your child have a special interest in sports, arts and theatre, or wilderness and science?  Beekeepers have redesigned the format of their summer child care program to give children the opportunity to focus on a special interest area and to learn while having fun.

Each morning session of the ten week camp, which begins on June 14th and runs through August 20th, will offer specialty sessions for the budding athlete, actor, or wilderness expert. A camper may stay in one specific area for the entire ten weeks or alternate weekly from one area to another. Campers may attend for the full ten weeks or less as their family’s schedule permits.

Afternoon activities will include group games, personal times, memory book and journaling activities, open art, reading, plays and hands-on science activities.  The highlight of the summer will be the First Annual Parents Day, set for August 12th, which will feature a cookout, plays performed by the campers and family games.

The new format is patterned after many other successful summer day care programs throughout the country and was thoroughly researched by Beekeeper Coordinator Linda Hemperley and her staff. This summer camp is open to all  current  kindergarten through eighth grade students.

For a listing of camp activities by week and a fee schedule, please contact Beekeepers Administrative Office, 27 Public Square, Brecksville, Ohio 44141 via phone 440-740-4114 or visit www.bbhcsd.org and select the Beekeepers section of the website. The 2010 Summer Discovery Camp will be held at Central School, 27 Public Square, Brecksville, Ohio.

Campers will choose at least 3 activities to be involved in for the afternoon.  Free play and time for electronics will be available in different segments of the day.

 Science Camp  1:00 – 4:00 (1 hour sessions)

Campers will explore many elements of science.  They will conduct experiments and test different elements to see the end results.  This is a “hands on” adventure and campers will get their hands dirty conducting the experiments and tests.  Some examples of projects that we will explore are; Diggin’ Dirty Science, Root View Farms, Atomic Instant Worms, Worm View Wonder, water and soil testing as well as conservation.  The campers will be mixing up all types of concoctions throughout the summer.  This adventure will appeal to all ages and genders.  Camper will have an exhibit for Parents Day.

Readers’ Theatre    1:00 – 4:00 (1 hour sessions)

Readers’ Theatre will help each camper explore their creative abilities.  This camp is geared for the camper that can not read as well as for those who are seasoned

Theatre students.  The campers will learn short plays and perform those plays at specified times during the camp.  They will learn what goes on behind the scenes to produce a play and will also make the props to support their plays.  Readers’ Theatre is designed to teach the campers how to perform for an audience without having the stress of memorizing the script.  The fear of forgetting their lines is removed and it will allow their natural abilities to shine.  Many types of plays such as comedies, fairytales and mysteries will be introduced.  Several aspects of performance will be explored, such as stage blocking, voice projection, body movement and facial expressions to bring the play to life.

There will be plays geared to K-1st grade and 2nd – 6th and if there are a sufficient number of older campers 7th – 8th grade that are interested we will have plays in their age group as well.  Older campers may elect to help with the set and blocking.

Campers will help select the plays that they will perform after having an opportunity to read over the plays.  Guest Instructors will work with the campers during the camp experience.

Campers that are students of music may want to be involved in this area.  We will need musical numbers played before the short plays are performed.  Students may bring their instruments to practice during this time.

Discovery Camp Memory Book and Journal 1:00 – 4:00 (1 hour sessions)

Campers that enjoy scrap booking, journal writing and photography will want to participate in the making of our Memory Book to display for Parents Day.  The campers will take pictures and write short entries describing each picture to tell the story of their time at Discovery Camp 2010.  We will display some of the pictures on our Beekeepers Web site so that visitors to the site will see what camp is all about.  This will be a great way to remember their days at camp for years to come.

Campers may wish to make a personal memory book to take home.

Open Art and Reading Stations  1:00 – 4:00 (1 hour sessions)

A variety of  art/crafts supplies will be available for the campers that prefer to create their own art  projects.  Reading materials will also be available to those who would prefer to read or they may bring their own books.  Enrichment papers will also be available to the campers.  Younger campers may wish to use play dough or do chalk drawings.

Personal Time and Group Games 4:00 – 5:30

Students my use their personal electronics at this time as well as play group or board games.  Basketball may be available depending on how the gym is being used on any particular day.  Outdoor time is also available to the Campers.
