The Board of Education took the final step to place a 5.8 mill operating levy on the November 2010 ballot at their July 8, 2010 meeting. The term of this levy is for a  five-year period.

The District has worked aggressively to cut costs by implementing reductions in staff, programs, and services over the past two years and will continue to do so. However, the approximate $3 million annual savings generated by these cuts is not enough to eliminate the need for additional operating funds. The District has not received an increase in operating funds for the past six years. The last time a new levy was approved by voters was in August 2004

[Scot Prebles]The Brecksville-Broadview Heights Board of Education unanimously approved the selection of Scot T. Prebles as the district’s new Superintendent of Schools at its meeting June 21. He will replace Dr. Tom Diringer who is retiring from the district at the end of July.

Prebles is currently the superintendent of Granville Exempted Village Schools in Granville, Ohio. Like Brecksville-Broadview Heights, Granville is one of only 18 districts in the State of Ohio to earn an “Excellent with Distinction” rating on the Ohio Department of Education’s Local Report Card for ten consecutive years.

Mr. Prebles previously served as Director of Secondary Education and high school principal for Worthington City Schools. Earlier in his career he was a teacher, coach, and high school principal with Edgewood City Schools, Kings Local City Schools, and Wilmington City Schools. Both his Bachelor’s and Masters Degrees were earned at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Prebles, his wife Leah, and their two elementary school-age children are looking forward to moving to the District and becoming active and visible members of the community.

As a kick-off to the PSO Mathopoly Night, students enjoyed an assembly where they learned about numbers, facts, sequences, operations, and more.  Who knew that figuring out problems could be so much fun!

Explore the World, Open a Book!

Students have been busy this week traveling to different continents placed throughout the school building.  They are visiting Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, Antartica, South America, and North America.  Students earn a ticket for each book they read this week.  The tickets are then taped to the walls connecting one continent to the next each day.  Some of the activities included wearing clothes that tell something about their heritage/culture, having celebrity readers come in to read to each grade level, and buddy reading.

The first graders are busy learning about the different patriotic symbols of our country in Social Studies.  Mrs. Gladysz's class took advantage of the warm weather to take her class outside to show the children how tall the Statue of Liberty is.  Mrs. Gladysz stood with her class at one end of the playground while another student walked with a measured string to the other end of the playground.  The statue reaches 151 feet from her foot to the top of the torch.  The students are also learning about George Washington, Abe Lincoln, the White House, the U.S. flag, the bald eagle, and patriotic music as part of this unit.
