2009 OGT SCORES STRONG AGAIN!

For the third consecutive year, BBHHS sophomores have collectively exceeded a Performance Index score of 110.0--a "standard of excellence" set forth by school leaders. In exchange for meeting the challenge, Principal Brian Wilch and others walked to school on June 8th. Showing signs of significant perspiration at the end of his driveway in Hudson, the 300-pound principal made his way to the high school by 7:04 am, finishing the 14-mile trek in 4.5 hours. Wilch's efforts were outdone by assistant principal Todd Rings, guidance counselor Bryan Bedford, and science instructor Mike Schmidt, as all three "ran" the entire distance from Rings' home in Strongsville--13 miles in total! Finally, other BBHHS staffers walked almost five miles to recognize these high test scores!

Preliminary scores indicate that the class of 2011 hit a mark of 110.3 on the Performance Index (a Local Report Card measure that weights higher scores on the Ohio Graduation Tests and deducts for lower, non-passing scores). 90% of the sophomore class passed all five parts of the OGT--another significant measure! Once the data is "scrubbed," official results will be released by the Ohio Department of Education. Individual OGT results for sophomores will be mailed home with report cards. A special salute goes out to the 39 sophomores who scored "Advanced" (the highest level weighted at 1.2) on all five tests!

MUTCH EARNS STATE RECOGNITION!

Brecksville-Broadview Hts. High School Baseball Coach, John Mutch, has been named the OHSAA Division I Baseball Co-Coach of the Year for 2009! This year's squad posted a 22-6 record, won the SWC Championship, and made a regional appearance for the second time in three years! Only at the helm for five years, John has developed the Bees baseball program into a perennial power.

HIGH SCHOOL SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENTS

Summer reading is an important part of the language arts curriculum.  The best way to improve vocabulary, writing, and (of course) reading is to read.  And so, summer reading has become a language arts requirement for all BBHHS students.  It is our hope that the selections and assignments will present an enjoyable challenge, as students prepare for the rigor of next fall.  Find the selections and assignments for your grade level, and ENJOY!

BBHHS EARNS NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON!

BBHHS is one of only 320 schools nationwide and one of only 55 public high schools in the country to earn a No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon Award for 2008.

In September of the 08-09 school year, U.S. Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings named 320 schools as 2008 No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon Schools. The No Child Left Behind-Blue Ribbon Schools award distinguishes and honors schools for helping students achieve at very high levels and for making significant progress in closing the achievement gap. Representatives from the high school attended the awards ceremony in Washington D.C. in October to receive the award. For additional information, please visit: http://www.ed.gov for the federal Blue Ribbon site.

High School Principal Brian Wilch was proud to announce that after a lengthy application process, Brecksville-Broadview Heights High School was being recognized as a Blue Ribbon School for 2008. The current seniors' achievement on the Ohio Graduation Test two years ago ranked BBHHS 6th in the state in the Performance Index category--the largest high school to score that high. That high ranking prompted the State Superintendent of Public Instruction to nominate BBHHS for consideration (since 2002, schools must be nominated by their respective states for Blue Ribbon consideration based on test data). Last year, after submitting the application for federal review and logging another strong performance on the OGT by our current juniors, BBHHS crossed the final hurdle: Adequate Yearly Progress met in all subgroup areas--paving the way for the award . . . arguably the highest national award in public education.
