Bee Athletic Boosters Minutes
June 6, 2005
Present at meeting:
Manuel and Ruth Saridakis, Larry Zgrabik, George Balasko, Steve Farnsworth, Karen Hale, Bill Levy, Charmagne Cimaglia, Bruce and Ellen Noggle, Kevin McPherson, Marcia Cline, Dan Kalinsky, Dave Schlabig, Doug Geib, Joe Kosek.
Joe Kosek welcomed Superintendent Steve Farnsworth and school board member George Balasko. They discussed the status of the Old Stadium property. Major repairs or renovations are badly needed at the property. The track is in poor shape, the bleachers are old, the press box is unsafe, and the locker rooms are a disgrace. The school district does not have the funds to launch a large-scale repair. The district holds the deed to the land. The deed includes a provision that says the land must be used for recreation purposes. The city of Brecksville has offered to finance the renovations. In exchange, the city wants the deed turned over to them. The school board is against this unless there is a contract specifying that the school district gets to use the facility in the exact same way it does now into the future and forever. Steve has sent a letter to the city of Brecksville asking for the city's plans, a contract specifying use of the facility, and a timeline of when things will be done. The school district is waiting for a response from Mayor Hruby. Some other ideas were brought up: corporate sponsorship, grant money, booster contribution. The current cost to the school district just to maintain the Old Stadium is $38,000-40,000 per year. A preliminary study to estimate the cost to renovate the area shows it would take between $300,000 to 600,000.
Bill Levy and Karen Hale of the Lake County Captains baseball team presented some of their programs they offer to high schools in the Cleveland area. They have a new program where high school baseball teams can come and play after a Captains game. Other groups from the high school could also be involved like the band, Music in Motion, etc. The Boosters could sell tickets as a fund-raiser. The high school team might also be able to use their indoor training facility in the winter or have a clinic run by the Captains' players. These activities would happen in April or May. Karen Hale will chair a committee. Joe Kosek will present these ideas to the travel baseball board. Bruce Noggle and Jim Tricomi are to help.
