January 3, 2007

  1. Opening Remarks

Mark Wirkus called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. on January 3, 2007 at the High School. Mark showed the attendees the bulletin that's being distributed by the marching band to find sponsors to help pay for new uniforms. He suggested the Boosters submit an allocation request to help pay for some of the new uniforms.

Attendees: Michael Bandsuh, Mark Becka, Marcia Cline, Bill Day, Ethnea Ferguson, Linda Hagen, Rex Harper, Dan Kalinsky, Bernie Lozar, Kelly Lozar, Phil Resparc, Jan Romance, Mark Shepard, Marlene Shepard, Charlie Towne, Mark Weaver, Jan Wirkus, Mark Wirkus

Please make sure that all attendees complete the sign-up sheet that is passed around at each meeting.

  2. Secretary's Report

The minutes of our meeting on December 5, 2006 were approved unanimously.

The year to date allocation requests will now be shown in the monthly minutes and posted on the web site for easy access to members.

Members should read meeting minutes posted on our website prior to each meeting. We will not use meeting time to read them, and will only ask for motions to approve previous minutes at each BEE Booster meeting unless there are changes to be made.

  3. Treasurer's Report

There was no official report given. However, unrestricted funds were estimated at about $80,000 after distribution of the concession stand earnings and allocation requests from last month.

  4. Membership Report

Charlie Towne reported one additional member since our last meeting, bringing our total to 187 members. Total year-to-date membership revenues are now at $32,565.

There was a brief discussion about adding a $25 Senior Citizen membership option to our current application form to encourage more Senior Citizens to become members. Charlie will add this to the form and get them distributed at the local recreation centers.

Bill Day introduced Rex Harper and Ethnea Ferguson from the Brecksville Kiwanis Club. They gave a brief overview of their club activities and encouraged new prospective members to attend any of their Thursday night meetings at the Brecksville United Methodist Church for more information.

  5. Team Reports

Basketball, Boys - The Junior Varsity team has 2 wins and 5 losses. The Varsity team is now at 4 wins and 3 losses and will play Amherst this Friday.

Basketball, Girls - The Junior Varsity team is doing well with 7 wins and 2 losses and has a six game winning streak. The Varsity team is ranked 20th in the Plain Dealer and has an overall record of 8 wins and 1 loss along with a winning streak of 7 games! They are undefeated in the conference at 5 - 0. They will meet Regina High School in the upcoming Classic Invitational tournament and this should be a very interesting game between two good teams.

Gymnastics - The Gymnastics team is doing well and won the Chardon and Westlake meets.

Bowling - The bowling team is in fifth place and continues to do well.

Hockey - Some of our injured players our now returning to the lineup and contributing to the team's efforts. The team finished in 2nd place at the Solon Melt the Ice Tournament. They won against Olmsted Falls in overtime, but lost to Amherst, also in overtime. The next skate with the Bees night will be on January 19, 2007 immediately following the game. The Pep Band will be playing at this game and always provides more enthusiasm for the players and fans. The team web site is now up and running.

Swimming - The swim teams have only lost one meet to Westlake and doing very well.

Wrestling - The wrestling team had a very successful holiday tournament, finishing in second place. Mike Pushpak won his weight class and Kyle Lang finished in second place in his weight class. The team also did very well at the Beast of the East tournament, finishing in 8th place out of 40 teams. Mike Pushpak won his weight class in this tournament too.

  6. Athletic Department Reports

Dan thanked everyone who helped out at the recent holiday wrestling tournament. Special thanks were given to Anne Marie Ringen for her outstanding help on the concession stands.

Lacrosse sign ups are taking place but more interest is needed to make this new sport become a reality at the school. Currently we have only 13 players signed up and will need at least 25 to make it go

  7. Allocation Requests

    1) Dan Kalinsky introduced and led a spirited discussion resurrecting the artificial turf project for the high school stadium field. Several items have changed since our last discussions on this project that may help it become a reality. Namely, the School Board is expressing some new interest in the project, turf pricing costs have been decreasing, and there is now a list of contributors that will help support the project financially.

Dan requested the Bee Athletic Boosters commit $75,000 this year, and up to $25,000 each year, if needed, for no more than five more years. Dan feels strongly that if this type of commitment is made by the Boosters, it will help the project go through and secure the remaining financing sources.

After much discussion, the group felt that we should commit to this project and it will provide a good benefit to many, student athletes in the school system, physical education classes, marching band as well as our local community sports teams, etc. The board approved this allocation request.

    2) Mark Wirkus submitted an allocation request to donate $2,000 towards the purchase of five new uniforms for the marching band. The board approved this allocation request.

  8. BEE Athletic Boosters Projects

Reverse Raffle - The date is set for March 24, 2007 and will again be at St. Paul's Hellenic Center. Due to timing overruns at this meeting, we will organize a special reverse raffle meeting prior to our next boosters meeting on February 5, 2007 to discuss details for this event.

  9. New Business

There was no new business discussed.

  10. Adjournment

The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 p.m.

The next BEE Athletic Boosters meeting will be at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, February 5, 2007 in the High School Media Center.
