Bee Athletic Boosters Minutes
April 3, 2006

Present at meeting: Karen Ryan, Manuel and Ruth Saridakis, Al Siebert, Marcia Cline, Larry Zgrabik, David Schlabig, Cliff Eggleton, Jane Bowditch, Tish O'Dell, Suzanne Lambert, Bernie and Kelly Lozar, Linda Hagen, Jan Wirkus, Larry Cox, Steve Zamaria, Jim Tricomi, Doug Geib, Joe Kosek, Dan Kalinsky, Phil Resparc, Kathy Bazil.

Secretary's Report: A motion to approve the minutes of the March 6, 2006 meeting was made by Manuel Saridakis and seconded by Kelly Lozar. The minutes were approved.

Membership Report: No new members.

Treasurer's Report: Balance as of March 31 is $81,900.44 of which $77,661.63 is uncommitted. The approximately $25,000 from memberships could be earmarked for capital improvements, leaving a balance of about $50,000. The Reverse Raffle brought in $26,272 with some funds still out and a few bills still to be paid. A motion to approve the treasurer's report was made by Jane Bowditch and seconded by Manuel Saridakis. Last year's Reverse Raffle netted $1500 more. The silent auction this year brought in $10,890 and last year brought in $14,050.

Reverse Raffle/Silent Auction: Joe Kosek thanked all those involved on the committee for their hard work. The event ran very smoothly this year. Even though we did not have any "big ticket" items this year, we still made quite a bit of money. Some suggestions for next year were made. One is to have the fall team reps get their parents interested and prepared to get a table together when we start selling tickets. This year we almost sold out. The last of the tickets were sold without dinners. No profit was made on ticket sales as that $75 of the $125 ticket price covers the food, beverages, hall rental, and music DJ. However, at least this year, because the ticket price was increased, this portion of the evening did not lose money. The silent Auction made about $11,000, program ads made $4000, and the sideboards and main board made $10,000. Cliff Eggleton commented that the timing of the evening went very well. It was also pointed out that using ping-pong balls for the drawing of the numbers was a good idea.

Golf Outing: This year's golf outing will be Thurs. Aug. 24 at Sleepy Hollow and will include a steak dinner. Two new committee members will be helping plan the event and several more are needed in order to assure no one person is over burdened. We are aiming for 90-100 golfers. We also would like to sell 30 signs. Let David Schlabig know of any names for sign sponsors. He will be looking at the school vendor list for possible contacts and Phil Resparc volunteered to assist in this matter of researching additional school vendors who could be supportive of the event by doing one or two or all of the following: sponsoring a hole or the Program, sending golfers(s), and supplying door prize items. The outing will be run as a scramble. A shotgun start is too expensive. We would have to have 30 additional golfers to make the same amount of money because the golf course substantially raises its prices. The committee also needs someone good at word processing. Jane Bowditch will help with the word-processing.

Team Reps:

  • Gymnastics - Trisha Stine and Christina Lenny were named to the Plain Dealer All-Star team.
  • Wrestling - Free style and Greco Roman competitions have started.
  • Girls Softball - Varsity is 1-1. Jen Kramer tied two state records in one game. JV has 2 wins. The team has 7 sophomores and 4 freshmen.
  • Boys Baseball - Varsity 0-2. JV 4-0. Freshman 1-2.
  • Boys Tennis - The first match is tomorrow.
  • Boys Volleyball - Have played one game beating St. Ignatius.
  • Track - The boys lost by a few points to North Royalton and the girls lost by 1 point to North Royalton last week. Some of our athletes were gone for spring break. North Royalton was not on spring break.

Allocation Requests:

The boys tennis team bought their shirts from Kohls but need money to put the school logo on them. Dan Kalinsky said the Athletic Department would pay for this.

The hockey team needs money for jerseys for the JV squad. The ones currently being used are 5 years old.

Athletic Director Report:

Dan mentioned that the school needs a new all terrain vehicle also known as a "Gator" which is used for field maintenance and for hauling items. The cost of one of these is $8,000. The school system will not have the money for this until 2008. The golf cart that the trainers use also needs to be replaced.

Other Business:

Joe made a few suggestions for finishing the donor plaque in the field house. Using removable nameplates would solve spelling and payment issues. Bruce Noggle is heading up this project.

Dan Kalinsky reported on the artificial turf plan. A decision needs to be made as soon as possible whether to go ahead with this project. The School Board cannot front the $800,000 cost of the project. Several financing options are being looked at. One is to finance it over 8 years. Each of the parties using the field would then commit to paying so much per year. The life span of the field would be about 10 years. Replacing it at that time would not be as costly as a new field. The committee is very enthusiastic about this. There are many advantages to putting this type of surface in - more teams can use it, the phys ed department can use it, band can use it, we would be able to host sectional and other post-season events. The surface is safer than grass. Any type of shoe, cleats or tennis, can be used on it. Some districts have funded their projects by either bond issues or permanent improvement funds. A discussion of funding this project followed. A motion was made and seconded to have a show of hands in support of the project. The majority of those present supported the project.

The Old Stadium still needs to be maintained and spruced up a bit.

We are still in need of officers for next year. We still need a president, one more vice president and a secretary.

Next meeting is May 1, 2006.

Meeting adjourned at 8:50 PM.

Submitted by Ruth Saridakis

Allocations Approved:

$2500 to the hockey team for new jerseys.
$1800 to the gymnastics team for items in order to commemorate winning State Championship.
