Bee Athletic Boosters Minutes
May 1, 2006

Present at meeting: Marcia Cline, Karen Ryan, Londa Latimer, Phil Resparc, Pam O'Hara, Tish O'Dell David Schlabig, Manuel and Ruth Saridakis, Jane Bowditch, Charlie Towne, Mark and Jan Wirkus, Doug Geib, Dan Kalinsky, Joe Kosek, Bernie and Kelly Lozar, Linda Hagen, Kathy Bazil.

Secretary's Report: A motion to approve the minutes of the April 3, 2006 meeting was made and seconded. The minutes were approved.

Membership Report: No new members. Jane is already working on getting the Middle School mailing list to send out membership forms. She will e-mail forms over the summer to our existing base.

Treasurer's Report: Balance as of April 30, 2006 is $81,834. Of this, $72,795 is uncommitted.

A question concerning the status of the indoor pole vault practice pit was raised. The Boosters were contributing half the cost of this project with the other half coming from the track team running the concession stand. All the necessary parts and padding for the pit were delivered to the auxiliary gym. An independent contractor was brought in to install the equipment. Unfortunately the floor of the auxiliary gym turned out to be unsuitable for installation. So after much time and effort, this project could not be completed. It was noted that Boosters, School, and a State grant in the past funded the cost of the current outdoor track ($125,000) and the $50,000 for the storage shed for track equipment.

A motion to approve the treasurer's report was made and seconded. The report was approved.

Committee Reports:

Reverse Raffle/Silent Auction: A date and location for 2007 is pending.

We will try to get ads in the local newspapers and magazines and with the alumni group. Phil Resparc will meet with Paul Cevasco to go over the vendors the school district deals with.

Allocation Requests:

The wrestling team needs a new mat for the wrestling room. Two of their mats are 10 years old. The total cost for the one mat is $8600. The wrestling team will pay $4300 and is asking Boosters to pay the other $4300.

The gator machine used for hauling heavy items, injured players, and for maintenance needs to be replaced. Cost is $8000.

Athletic Director Report:

Dan Kalinsky stated that the spring sports reception will be on May 31 at 7PM. On Aug. 6, 2006 at 7PM will be a "Meet the Bees" evening. This evening will give parents a chance to meet with the coaches of fall sports, fill out all appropriate forms and pay fees. Another evening will be scheduled before winter sports and spring sports. A suggestion was made to add e-mail addresses on the forms for both the athletic department and Boosters. Dan also gave an update on Middle School sports. Both boys and girls track teams did well at their recent invitational. A question was asked if 7th and 8th grade baseball/softball teams would be formed in the future. Dan said no at this time. Because of the strong travel programs in our communities, a player for the school would not be permitted to play travel and for the school at the same time. Therefore, for development purposes, the travel programs locally offer a better development opportunity for each player.

Bruce Noggle is in the final stages of designing the plaque recognizing all those who contributed to the development and construction of the field house. We would like to have the Brecksville Magazine and the Broadview Heights Journal to do an article on the project and the plaque.

Fri. May 5 the boys varsity baseball team will play North Royalton at Jacobs Field at 3:30 PM. Bill Miko and John Carter of Cage Club recommended the team for this event.

Other Business:

Artificial turf update: Doug Geib and Dan Kalinsky recently met with Steve Farnsworth, Paul Cevasco, Brian Wilch, Jason Radak, Karen Obratil, Dave Dosen, and George Balasko. The school board wants $250,000 in the bank before it will consider this project. Doug proposed that we poll our members to see whether we would have our members support. Even if BAB does support the project, our share is only 25% of the total cost ($800,000). By putting in artificial turf, the school district would save $30,000 in maintenance fees per year. The school system would also have the possibility of income from advertising and hosting more events. The hesitation of the school board to embrace this project may stem from the fact that Steve Farnsworth is retiring and the board needs to focus on finding a replacement. BAB members are encouraged to talk to their school board members and tell them we support the artificial turf project.
