Bee Athletic Boosters Minutes
September 12, 2005

Present at meeting: Karen Ryan, Dan Hodous, Dave Lubinger, Barb Burant, Bill Day, Karen Hale, Sherri Bonamer, Ray Everett, Kevin and Jaci McPherson, Judy Zamaria, Mark Wirkus, Larry Cox, Cliff Eggleton, Charlie Towne, Kathy Bazil, Denise Saridakis, Joan Sonich, Dan Kalinsky, Jim Tricomi, Anne Rosenthal, Al Siebert, Linda Hagen, Ruth Ann Resparc, Ruth Saridakis, Joyce Pushpak.

President Joe Kosek could not be present so Jim Tricomi opened the meeting by welcoming new and returning faces.

Dan Kalinsky introduced the two faculty managers. Dave Lubinger teaches social studies at the high school and has been a faculty manager for 12 years. Dan Hodous has been the voice to the Bees for 20 years.

Secretary's Report: A motion to accept the minutes of the June 6, 2005 meeting was made, seconded and approved.

Membership Report: Charlie Towne reported for Jane Bowditch. We currently have 3 faculty, 20 standard, 29 gold and 74 platinum memberships for a total of 126 members and $22,675. At the end of last year we had $17,000. This increase in numbers could be because of increasing our mailings to the Middle School and also the football families got early mailings. It was suggested that the wording on the gold and standard cards be clarified so that only 1 family member is using the card at a time. We need a volunteer to man a membership table at Friday's football game. Barb Burant, Joan Sonich and Denise Saridakis will do this.

Treasurer's Report: The books have been given to Mark Wirkus for audit.

Committee Reports:

Golf outing: Dave Schlabig was not present but he will report next month. The outing did make over $10,000.

50/50: Ruth Ann Resparc needs volunteers to help sell tickets at football and basketball games. At the first home football game we made $761.

Reverse Raffle/Silent Auction: Lori Donner will again handle the reverse raffle part of the evening. We need someone to handle the silent auction side of the event. Last year the total raised by the evening was $27,500 of which $19,000 was raised by the silent auction items. The silent auction is a very important part of the evening. It contributes a large amount of money to the Boosters. We would like to have someone in place by mid-October.

Team Reps: Larry Cox will be coordinating the team reps this year.

Team Rep Reports:

  • Tennis - Sherri Bonamer thanked the boosters on behalf of the tennis program for the new nets. The girls varsity is 10-2.
  • Cheerleading - Karen Ryan reported that the girls had camp at Kent State Univ. this past summer. The JV squad won their division. The cheerleaders will be holding a Cheer Clinic on Oct 14 as a fundraiser and the participants will cheer at the football game that evening.
  • Freshman Football - Linda Hagen reported that there are 34 boys on the team, 7 are in casts. The team has 2 losses.
  • Varsity and JV Football - Joan Sonich reported that the varsity is 2-1. JV is 0-3.
  • Cross Country - Ray Everett reported that at the Bruce Lerch Invitational the boys A team finished 4th and the B team finished 12th. The girls A team won and the B team finished 4th.
  • Volleyball - Varsity is 2-4. JV 5-1.

Allocation Requests:

Freshman football is requesting money for pants. They were purchased at cost from Home Team Sports. The parents have raised $400.

Track: The track coaches are requesting an indoor pole-vaulting pit. The price is $3900. A short discussion followed with Dan Kalinsky answering several questions. Strongsville, Medina and Brunswick have this type of equipment. We have 4-5 girls and 6-8 boys participating in this event.

Wrestling: Wall mats are needed in the gym for safety of wrestlers, PE classes and basketball. The cost for installing them wall-to-wall is estimated at $8000.

Athletic Director Report:

Dan Kalinsky thanked the coaches, parents and helpers that were at the Bruce Lerch Invitational. There were 32 varsity and 40 middle school teams. We couldn't have done it without the help of these volunteers. A committee has been formed to study the Old Stadium property with the possibility of turning it over to the city of Brecksville. It would then be renovated and used by both the school district and the city. Serious talks are now in progress. Girls volleyball has a new coach - Beth Smotzer. She is teaching social studies at the high school. Tom Mulhall is coaching boys varsity golf. Elementary school night is this Fri.

Other Business:

It was suggested that at the Old Stadium that the Boosters build the field house. Linda Hagen suggested that the pavilion by the high school field house could use a little sprucing up. Perhaps we can contribute to this. A question was raised why the concession stand at the Old Stadium was not opened for JV and freshman games. Dan stated that it's been hard to get workers for it and there is a lot of work for little profit. The facility is limited in what we can offer there.

Ticket prices for the Southwest Conference games are $6 for adults and $3 for students. However, students will have to pay $6 at the gate at football games. Student tickets are available for pre-sale at the all the schools (elementary, Central, Middle and High School) Home Team Sports also has advance ticket sales.

The manning of the concession stand was discussed. Up until about 5 years ago, athletic teams ran the stand. Then the Boosters took it over to help raise funds for the field house and other needs. Last year baseball/softball ran it. If Boosters can coordinate it, we can run it. If not, Dan will offer it to the coaches and teams.

Karen Hale updated us on the Lake County Captains fundraiser. A committee was formed in June. Boosters will sell tickets and will make $1 per ticket and will also make money on any ticket that comes thru their gate. The rec centers of Brecksville and Broadview Heights will support this. The Captain's mascot will visit us 4 times. We do not have to sell a minimum number of tickets. The Bees team will get 1 workout at the Lake County facility. Coach Mutch will also go on the Trivisono radio program. The Bees will get to play after the Captains game. Tentative date is April 15, 2006.

Cliff Eggleton stated that Delmonico's Restaurant has donated gift certificates for home football games and will be donating again to the silent auction.

Meeting adjourned at 8:02 PM
