On April 10, 2017, the Brecksville-Broadview Heights City School District (BBHCSD) ratified a new contract with the Brecksville-Broadview Heights Education Association (BEA), the union representing the district’s teaching staff. After negotiating for more than a year, a settlement was reached on a two-year agreement with a possible three-year extension tied to passage of a levy prior to June 30, 2018.
Key financial terms of the new contract for the first two years:
• During the 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 school years, teachers either receive a step increase or a 2% raise, but not both. The base salary on Schedule A (15-step pay scale) does not change.
• Teachers receive a one-time only $1,000 Education Stipend after ratification.
Upon passage of a levy, the contract extends three years with these key provisions:
• All new teachers are placed on Schedule B (25-step pay scale) for the 2018-2019 school year and thereafter.
• During the 2018-2019, 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years, teachers can remain on Schedule A and receive either a step increase or a 2% raise, but not both. Or, they can transition to Schedule B. The base salary on the Schedule A does not change for the five year agreement whereas the base salary on Schedule B increases 2% each year of the five year agreement.
With collective bargaining agreements in place with BEA and BOSS (Brecksville-Broadview Heights Organization Support Staff), more energy and focus can now be directed towards the 5.99 mil levy on the May 2 ballot. With the loss of $8 million in state funding and more cuts proposed, local financial support is now needed to keep our schools and community strong.
